How to Get A Job in a Call Center

How to Easily Get A Job in a Call Center

MODULE 1

Read, Read, Read

As a call center agent you are expected to be a good English conversationalist first and foremost. So if you are having difficulty expressing yourself in English, you will have to remedy that by doing the following exercises:

Read

Yes you have to read a lot if you wish to become a good English conversationalist, of course you need to read English reading materials. If you don't read much, you have to start now.

Read Articles

Read a lot of good articles from reference books, magazines, newsletters, newspapers, journals, or web logs. Read articles that interest you so that you won't get bored. You could find a lot of good articles to read in school or public libraries or you could borrow old magazines or newspapers from your friends or relatives. Magazines and newspapers are a good source of English articles. Here are a few good titles; Panorama, Time, Newsweek, Asiaweek, and Life Magazine.

Read the Newspaper

Reading the news everyday will also help enhance your English. The idea is for you to practice reading not silently but aloud. Reading the newspaper will not only help you practice your English but you will also be well informed about current events.

Read Poetry

They say that poetry is the highest form of literary expression, and that is why it is only proper for you to also read poetry. Reading poetry will help you understand the beauty of the English language. In reading poetry you can also learn the intonations and the stresses of the English language. Read poetry aloud, and put stress and intonations while you read it.

Read Tongue Twisters

Reading tongue twisters is probably the best thing to read and practice if you wish to train yourself in order to get hired in a call center, because a lot of call centers include tongue twisters in their assessments. When you read tongue twisters enunciate each word clearly, you don't have to read the tongue twister fast, your goal is to say each word perfectly.

Reading Habit

If it's hard for you to start the habit of reading, what you can do is to only read what you're interested with. If you're into sports, for example boxing, read only stuff about boxing for starters or if you like cooking, read cookbooks. The point is for you to start the reading.

Read Aloud

Reading out loud accomplishes three things:

1. It creates confidence
2. You can practice the way you pronounce English words
3. You can personally check the tone of your voice, proper tone is very important when you're speaking with Americans or English speakers.

So what are you waiting for, start reading aloud, to improve the way you say English words.

Imitate English Speakers

While reading aloud, try imitating the way Americans say the words. Listen closely to how they say each word and then emulate the way they pronounce the words. This way, you can develop a good tone and you will learn how to speak English clearly and faster.

Read in Front of the Mirror

Newscasters practice in front of the mirror while they were training. So like TV newscasters, you should read in front of the mirror while glancing at yourself once in a short while. This way you could see your mouth movement and you will be able to adjust if you need to open your mouth wider or stress on certain points of what you are reading. If you do this, you will definitely sound better and you will be able to enunciate the words a lot better. Try it, it works.

Scheduled Reading

Set a specific time everyday for reading. Make it a point to stick to your reading schedule. It may be just fifteen minutes or ten minutes a day but stick to it. If you want to schedule your reading at eight in the morning or at ten in the evening, stick to it no matter what happens.

Short Reading

It is better to read a few minutes everyday instead of reading long hours once a week. Reading for hours once a week is good but reading for even fifteen minutes everyday is better because it builds up the strength of your voice, your familiarity with the words, and your confidence.

Longer Reading

Once you are comfortable with your reading schedule you should start reading more everyday because the more you practice reading aloud the more you will improve the way you pronounce the words and will also improve your comprehension.

Important Tip
Some call centers would require you to read a few paragraphs regarding a product or service and then would ask you to explain or answer a few questions based on what you have read.

When asked to do so, you should do the following:
Read carefully.
Spot and then remember key information from what you read.
Digest what you've read and think of possible questions they may throw at you after reading the material, and then think of possible answers.
Don't be in a hurry to finish what you're reading, take your time.
If you still have time, reread the material, in order to fully grasp what was written.

The purpose of this kind of test is for the recruitment department to assess your comprehension, so practice reading everyday it will carry you through the tests.

MODULE 2

Write, Write, Write

Have you ever wondered why we always have writing exercises in school? The obvious reason is for us to express ourselves in writing and to practice our reasoning and sharpen the way we think. Writing in English also forces us to think in English.

If you wish to work for a call center, you have to start writing down your thoughts in English. It is going to be a lot similar to what you have always done in school only a lot less technical and academic. You have to write frequently, because working for a call center will require you to communicate well in spoken and written English.

Keep a Journal

Buy a notebook. Use it to write down your thoughts, of course you have to write in English not in any other language. It may be difficult at first but as you write more frequently, it will be easier for you to write about what you think and feel.

If you have no idea what to write about, here are a few tips:

Write about your daily experiences
Write about the things you have to do each day, make a “To Do List” in your journal
Write about your family and friends, enemies, neighbors, or colleagues. In short, write about the people around you or the people who influence you.
Your deep dark secrets are a good source of writing material, just don't let anybody read your journal if you intend to write your deepest secrets
If you've always wanted to be a novelist or a short story writer, start putting outlines or drafts of your stories in your journal you'll never know your dream of becoming a writer may just come true
If you're into poetry, use your journal to write your poems
Write commentaries about what you believe or do not believe in.
You may also write articles in your journal. Your articles doesn't have to be like the ones you read about in magazines or newspapers. It may just be topics that you like about or things that interest you.

Don't hold back anything, write about everything that comes to mind be it good or bad. Make your journal writing automatic, let your writing flow, don't let anything hinder your thoughts.

Keep Your Notebook Handy

Always bring your notebook with you so you could write when you feel like writing. But don't always wait for the urge to write, make it a point to jot down anything that comes to your mind.

Start a Blog

A Blog is short for “Web Log”. A Blog is a convenient way of putting your thoughts on the Internet. You must start your own blog on the Internet, you could simply log on to Blogger.com or other Blog sites to create your own Blog for free.

Important Tip

Some call centers will ask you to write a few paragraphs about anything you want to discuss in writing. It's a good idea to write about what you can do and what you can offer the company, because it is another chance to prove you are right for the job. But it is perfectly fine to write about anything that pops in your head, just make sure that your grammar is perfect and all the words are spelled correctly.

Other contact centers might ask you to answer questions in essay form. The best thing to do when you encounter something like this is to think about your answers first before writing it down on paper. If you have a scratch paper, you may want to write a draft or an outline of your answers first in order to fully explain and elaborate what's on your mind. Take your time, don't be in a hurry. Recruitment people would usually give ample time for you to finish your short essay.
